Dealing with Aquaphobia

Although aquaphobia may not be as mind-numbing as being diagnosed with cancer or having your legs cut off, it could still affect your lifestyle and cause you significant disturbances. For one, you won't be able to enjoy pool parties or frolicking at the beach during summer. And taking a long bath in the tub would definitely be out of the question.

Unfortunately, there's really no known way of preventing aquaphobia or any other phobia for that matter. There are available treatments though that will help you get over your fear of the water and even have you enjoy a good swim. For people who have light aquaphobia or lack of confidence in stepping into a pool, a swimming lesson or a self-help gradual exposure therapy could do the trick. Others may need the help of a professional therapist.

If your phobia already disturbs your normal functions, affects your job or studies, and disrupts your general peace of mind, then it's time to consult a therapist. There are a number of techniques available to cure aquaphobia. The good news is this disorder is treatable. The US National Institute of Mental Health says three-fourths of of people who have specific phobias get over their fears and lead normal lives.
